« Hercules Labor III – Gathering the Golden Apples of the Hesperides (Gemini)

Hercules Labor IV - The Capture of the Cerynitian Hind (Cancer)

by Cynthia Guerrero de Leon

Hercules is asked to rescue the Cerynitian hind, a female deer with golden horns. This doe was sacred to Artemis, goddess of the hunt, and Hercules was instructed to bring it to the safety of the holy shrine of Mykenae. While standing between the pillars of the Gate, Hercules hears Artemis warning that “The doe is mine; touch it not” and later hears Diana, the huntress of the heavens, also claiming possession of the doe. Hercules hears a voice telling him that the doe belongs to “the God whose shrine you see on the distant mount.” He arduously chases the doe for a year, then finds it sleeping by a pool. He shoots an arrow between the tendons and bones of the two forelegs, pinning it down without drawing blood; then carries the doe to the holy shrine.

Lesson: This labor teaches us to choose, through discrimination, to let the gift of intuition (the doe) bring light into our inner temple. We must realize that the gift of intuition does not belong to us. It belongs to God and we must therefore choose to “bring it to the shrine."
