Hercules Labor X - The Slaying of Cerberus and the Release of Prometheus (Capricorn)

by Cynthia Guerrero de Leon

Hercules is asked to save Prometheus and release him from his suffering. He travels downwards to the underworld, arriving at the river Styx which the deceased souls have to cross on their way to Hades, the kingdom of the dead. Charon, the ferryman, is frightened of Hercules but nonetheless takes him over to Hades, where he asks the king for the right to free the suffering Prometheus. The king agrees on the condition that he conquers the monster Cerberus (a three-headed dog with razor teeth, a venomous snake for a tail, and a swarm of snakes growing out of his back) with his bare hands. Hercules proceeds and soon hears the dog. A fight ensues and Hercules gets hold of Cerberus’ throat, eventually choking and conquering him.

Hercules then goes on to find Prometheus chained on a rock, his liver being eaten by a vulture. Quickly, Hercules breaks the chains and sets Prometheus free. He then returns to the world of the living.

Lesson: This labor teaches us to bring light into the world of darkness and to conquer the lower spheres of our personal desires (symbolized by Cerberus). Hercules, who is himself Prometheus, symbolizes humanity being freed from suffering. Our sphere of development must evolve from personal to family to friends to humanity.
