Hercules Labor V - The Slaying of the Nemean Lion (Leo)

Hercules is asked to protect the people from the perilous Nemean lion that was ravaging their land. He takes his bow and arrow and seeks for the lion. After searching for countless hours, he intuitively seeks it in its den. The lion starts roaring and Hercules shoots it with his bow and arrow, but the arrows bounce off. Weaponless, he runs towards the lion, but it turns and disappears into the cave. He enters the lion’s cave and blocks the two exits of the cave, then he grabs the lion by the throat with his two bare hands and kills it through his own strength.
Lesson: This labor teaches us about courage, self-confidence, right choice and wise action. These were the “best weapons” of Hercule in winning over the lion. The lion symbolizes our self-conscious, dominating personality that needs to be overcome in order to bring about awareness and recognition of the Higher Self. The soul-infused personality manifests itself by helping the suffering humanity and bringing light to people who are in the dark.
