« Hercules Labor VI – Seizing the Girdle of Hippolyte (Virgo)

Hercules Labor VII - The Capture of the Erymanthian Boar (Libra)

by Cynthia Guerrero de Leon

Hercules is asked to capture the wild boar that was spreading so much fear and terror all around. While tracking it down, he meets Pholos, a Centaur (half-horse, half-man) who invites him to share a cask of wine that was not supposed to be opened unless al Centaurs were present. Cherion, another Centaur, joins them in the feast. When the other Centaurs heard about the opening of the cask, they come down in anger and a fierce battle ensues. During this battle, Hercules kills his friends Pholos and Chorion and escapes to the mountains. This would be the second time Hercules would slay someone he loves.

Hercules moves on to find the wild boar through the bitter cold heights of Mount Erymanthus. He decides to set a trap. After some time, the wild boar emerges, looking for food, and falls into the trap. Hercules ties the boar’s hind legs and pushes it down the valley.

Lesson: This labor teaches about walking the path of balance as we meet many paradoxes and opposites in our life. The double test for Hercules was the recognition of his friendship with Pholos (symbol for physical strength) and Chorion (symbol for good thoughts) and the fearless courage to search after the wild boar (symbol of desire or basic nature).
