Hercules Labor XII - The Capture of the Red Cattle of Geryon (Pisces)

Hercules is asked to drive to the Sacred City the herd of dark red cattle owned by Geryon, the master with three heads, three bodies and six hands. He sets forth the Erytheia and finds the herd of red cattle. He is immediately attacked by Orthus, the double-headed dog, but Hercules kills him with a single blow. Hercules spares the life of the fearful shepherd Eurytion. As Hercules drives the cattle towards the Sacred City, Geryon pursues him. As Gersyn hurls a spear at Hercules, Hercules retaliates with a flaming arrow that pierces the three bodies of Geryon. The monster falls down with a despairing groan. Hercules drives the cattle towards the Sacred City, once in a while leaving the herd to search cattle that stray along the way.
Lesson: This labor teaches us to conquer our three-fold personality (physical, emotional and mental symbolized by Geryon) that is imprisoned in the dark land of Erytheia, the land of illusion, glamour and maya. Geryon’s dark red cattle symbolize humanity with its many desires. Oaths represents man’s physical and emotional nature to which a simple human being (symbolized by the shepherd) could have close attachments. Through virtues, right thinking and good deeds, we are able to transform ourselves so that we can arrive at the “Sacred City of Wisdom”.
