« Hercules Labor VIII – Destroying the Lernaean Hydra (Scorpio)

Hercules Labor IX - The Killing of the Stymphalian Birds (Sagittarius)

by Cynthia Guerrero de Leon

Hercules is asked to flush the Stymphalian birds which inhabited a marsh near Lake Stymphalus in Arcadia. These birds feasted on human flesh with their iron beaks sharpened like a sword. They were also believed to have killed men with their feathers that are like steel shafts.

As Hercules approaches the marsh, three birds sweep down upon Hercules. He tries to kill them with his arrows and with traps within the marsh, but to no avail. Finally, he resorts to making intolerable noise by sharply clashing cymbals. Bewildered and confused, the multitude of birds take flight in frantic haste, never to return. Finally, silence spreads across the marsh.

Lesson: This labor teaches us that sometimes we need more than every day “weapons” to get rid of our deep-seated black character spots (symbolized by the Stymphalian birds). Hercules’ use of sound as a “weapon” is an indication of his advanced mind. The advanced mind has the power to bring about right thought, right speech and right action (the three gifts of Sagittarius when the “three birds” are chased out of our character).
