Hercules Labor XI - Cleansing the Augean Stables (Aquarius)

by Cynthia Guerrero de Leon

Hercules is asked to cleanse the kingdom of Augeas of ancient evil. King Augeas owned vast herds of cattle which deposited manure that has never been cleared away within the royal stables. Horrible stench and pestilence swept through the land. Hercules informs the king of his willingness to clean the stables. King Augeas gives him one day to complete the task, promising a tenth of his flock of cattle if he succeeds.

Hercules then wanders through the countryside and observes two rivers - Alpheus and Peneus - flowing quietly nearby. He finds the answer to the problem. He labored to divert the courses of the two rivers to flow straight through the stables of King Augeas. The rushing torrents wash away the long-accumulated manure with all its thick aroma.

He finishes the task in one day. However, Kin Augeas refuses to give Hercules his reward, saying that it was the rivers that did the work, not him.

Lesson: This labor teaches us that Life and Love (the two rivers) can change our ways and help remove the filth and stench from our “Augean stables” of inner and outer pollution, waste, misery and illness.
