Hercules Labor VIII - Destroying the Lernaean Hydra (Scorpio)

Hercules is asked to destroy the monstrous, nine-headed Hydra which lived in the stagnant swamp of Lerna. It was claimed that as soon as one head was destroyed, two more grew in its place. So Hercules sets up a strategy by shooting flaming arrows into the monster’s cavern. Hydra emerges furious. Hercules attacks the raging monster, but every time he cuts its head, two new ones would grow. Then suddenly he realizes that Hydra survives on mud and darkness, so he grasps Hydra with his bare hands and raises it high above to the purifying air and light of the sun. Hydra loses its power and the nine heads drop. Hercules cuts the mystic head of the Hydra that was immortal and buries it deep beneath a rock.
Lesson: This labor teaches us to battle our many weaknesses and failures (symbolized by the many-headed Hydra) and lift ourselves into the light of our divinity. We can all manifest our spiritual essence if we emerge triumphant over our selfish personality.
